Costs Are Rising: These Popular Destinations Are Increasing Tourist Taxes in
2025
As part of efforts to combat the negative
effects of overtourism, several countries and regions will be increasing or
introducing mandatory tourist fees in 2025. If you’re planning a trip next
year, be aware of the additional costs in these destinations:

What
Travelers Should Expect in 2025
Greece
Starting in January, Greece will increase its
daily tourist tax. Travelers will pay:
- €2 per day from November to February (previously €0.50)
- €8 per day from April to October
A one-week stay during peak season could now
cost an extra €56 per person.
Portugal
Tourist taxes vary by municipality, with most
charging €1-2 per night. In 2025, the Azores will introduce a new
€2 per night fee for visitors.
Thailand
A long-delayed tourist tax is expected to take
effect in mid-2025:
- Travelers arriving by land will pay a one-time fee of 300
THB (€8)
- Those arriving by sea will pay 150 THB (€4)
France
Paris is increasing its tourist tax by nearly 200%.
New fees will range from:
- €1.95 per night for a 3-star hotel
- €15.60 per night for luxury
hotels or non-classified accommodations
Spain
In Mogán (Gran Canaria), tourists will
face an extra 15% charge on hotel and apartment stays beginning in 2025.
Italy
Venice will continue its visitor fee in
2025 but will double the charge from €5 to €10 for tourists
booking last-minute trips (less than four days in advance).
Netherlands
Amsterdam is raising its cruise tax
from €14 to €14.50 per person for those arriving by sea or river
transport.
